I provide a safe and supportive environment in which you can look at anything that is troubling you – whether in your current situation or from past memories and experiences – without the fear of judgement and without the intrusion of someone else’s opinions and needs.

My experience includes working with issues of low self-esteem and confidence, bereavement and loss, drug and alcohol use, recovering from abusive experiences, stress-related problems, anxiety and phobias, and depression.

    About Us #06Linda Baker

I am a qualified and experienced counsellor, working with adults on a short term and open ended basis. I offer the supported space and freedom to find a clearer understanding of yourself, to safely work through your difficulties and emotional distress, to improve coping strategies, realise hidden strengths and potential for personal growth and change.

As an integrative counsellor, I am able to draw upon and combine a wide spectrum of theoretical approaches within my therapeutic practice. However, counselling is not just about applying my knowledge and using any particular theoretical framework; it is the nature and quality of an authentic therapeutic relationship that is vital in bringing about a successful outcome and my approach is down-to-earth, caring and compassionate.

I have helped many people to deal with a diverse range of issues, including anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, life transitions, relationship issues, eating disorders, sexuality and sexual identity, trauma, self-destructive behaviour, bereavement and loss. I also have a particular interest in working with issues around dyslexia, bullying (in the work place, at home or in the social setting) and work-related pressures and stress. Arising from bad childhood experiences and an educational background that failed to support them, dyslexic adults can be left with a negative self-belief arising from feelings of being 'stupid' and 'different'. Counselling can help identify and disentangle these negative beliefs and restore a more positive and fulfilling sense of potential and self-esteem.

    About Us #07
    Philip Gatter

Hello, I’m Philip Gatter, and I’m a gay-affirmative therapist. I’ve worked in a homelss charity, in Mind, and in two LGBT services (The Metro Centre, and Islington Mind Outcome). When I worked for the NHS I also saw psychiatric outpatients, so I have worked with clients with challenging problems, including childhood sexual abuse, psychosis and personality problems.

I’m an integrative counsellor. This means I integrate some other techniques within my major way of working, which is client-centred, or humanistic. The central belief of this approach is that we all contain the seeds for our recovery, but the therapist can play a major role in enabling this. The extra techniques I use are Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) which helps resolve distressing symptoms (e.g panic attacks) and psychodynamic approaches where relationships are the main problem for the client.

I work with all kinds of clients, with a special interest in LGBT people, especially those who have been persecuted for their sexuality, or are having problems coming to terms with their sexuality. The other problems I address include anxiety and depression, sexual problems, abuse (sexual and other), difficulties in forming relationshps, problems with alcohol and other substances.

I look forward to working with you in Islington Counselling Centre.
